Improving women’s health in Sub-Saharan Africa through service design

Every day approximately 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. The Better Outcomes in Labour Difficulty (BOLD) project is a joint two year initiative of WHO, M4ID and three universities to address maternal mortality and morbidity through the design of innovative services and tools to support health workers in providing appropriate care during childbirth and to increase demand for respectful, quality care among women and their families. Can service design make a difference and empower a shift in behavior?

Concept: Klara Lindner: Electrify off-grid households in developing world 

Klara Lindner explains how she helps to electrify off-grid households in the developing world. Klara is working for ‘Mobisol’, a young Berlin-based social business. She shares her projects’s scope, process and learnings while implementing the electricity service in Tanzania and Kenya.

​

Klara has a background in electrical engineering and business. She spent one year at Potsdam’s d-school and is working at the intersection of decentralized energy provision and microfinance since 2009. Quite recently she became PhD fellow of a graduate school for Microenergy Systems.

Concept: Exhale in Healthcare Service

Exhale is a service design project for social innovation developed in 2010 by: Yue Xu, Valeria Ossio and Malavika Limaye as design researchers from the University of Dundee for the Clackmannannshire’s Local Council in Scotland. Lesley McKee, Fan Xia and Mike Press kindly supported us throughout the process.
